Jaeger-LeCoultre Tank Tonneau Jumbo – Grey Roman Dial, Ref. 9114.42 (1970s)

A rare, oversized interpretation of one of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s most elegant case designs, this 1970s Tank Tonneau Jumbo captures the minimalist beauty and technical finesse that defined the maison during the era. Finished in brushed stainless steel with a wonderfully preserved grey “ghost slate” dial, this is vintage JLC design at its most distinctive.

Industrial-Elegant Design – The Case & Aesthetics

The watch features the iconic Tank Tonneau case shape—stretched, contoured, and unmistakably architectural. At an impressive 31 × 44 mm, this is the jumbo configuration, offering a bold yet refined wrist presence that is seldom found in vintage JLC pieces of the period.

The case retains its original brushed steel finish, showing crisp lines and the characteristic soft satin sheen. It remains extremely well preserved with only minimal signs of gentle ageing.

One of the highlights is its spotless grey slate brushed dial, sometimes referred to as a “ghost” tone for its subtle, shifting colour under changing light. The dial is exceptionally clean, showing no flaws, and features applied white Roman numerals that add visual depth and a refined contrast against the muted grey surface.

A Jaeger-LeCoultre signed crown completes the exterior—a small detail, but increasingly uncommon to find original on watches of this era.

Calibre 818 – Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Slim Manual Masterpiece

Inside ticks the celebrated Calibre 818, a slim, beautifully constructed, manually wound movement from Jaeger-LeCoultre’s golden age of mechanical engineering. Recently freshly serviced, it winds with buttery smoothness and keeps excellent time.

This calibre represents the brand’s philosophy of merging technical sophistication with an elegant, ultra-thin profile—perfect for the Tank Tonneau’s elongated silhouette.

The mineral glass sits clean and clear, with only a few small age-related marks visible under close inspection.
