An exceptionally rare and highly collectible Cartier Tank Louis Automatic Ref. 17002, crafted in solid 18k yellow gold and dating to circa 1972–1975. This fascinating watch represents one of Cartier's earliest automatic Tank Louis models and is regarded by collectors as an early automatic prototype.
Unlike the later Jumbo Automatic models, this reference retains the classic 23 × 30 mm Tank Louis dimensions—identical to the manual-wind Ref. 78086—while housing the automatic Cartier Calibre 076. Among collectors, this distinctive case is affectionately known as the "Chubby" or "Flatback" due to its thicker profile and flat caseback. The added thickness accommodates the automatic movement while preserving the elegant proportions of the classic Tank Louis.
Adding to its significance is the remarkably low serial number 0082, with crisp engravings still clearly visible on the caseback. The original Paris-signed dial shows light, even aging, giving the watch authentic vintage character. It is complemented by blued steel hands, a blue sapphire cabochon crown, a spotless crystal, and a brand-new black leather strap.
